Dundalk SCADA Upgrade

In early 2020, Summa was awarded the Township of Southgate Dundalk Well D3 & D4 PLC Upgrade, Replacement, and Programming Project.

This project included engineering, design, and implementation of the PLC and OIT upgrades at wells D3 and D4 and the SCADA system that manages these wells in addition to D5 well. Fall 2020, Summa is pleased to announce successful completion of this project! The existing SCADA system has been completely replaced, D3 & D4 were retrofitted with new PLC’s, and all three well now have SCADA EDGE Control c/w full system control and monitoring and store and forward data collection.

With thorough field investigation, and a clear understanding of the system, the transition plan was developed and implemented with minimal down time and interruptions to the water demand requirements. Training of our intuitive SCADA design and navigation was given to operations. A full documentation package was delivered to complete the successful upgrade.

Township of Enniskillen

Township of Enniskillen Waster System

Summa’s expertise upgrading SCADA systems and our understanding of municipal water systems in addition to our experience in design, programming, and commissioning online facilities allowed for the successful completion of this project.

Background

The goal was to upgrade the SCADA assets, integrate existing instrumentation, and implement the new system with minimal interruptions to the water supply.

Summa, as the general contractor, was responsible for the full scope of work under this contract. The obsolete GE 9030’s were upgraded to RX3i, Wonderware Intouch was upgraded to the latest version, the workstation was upgraded, compliance reporting was upgrade to Dream Report, and the communications was upgraded to cellular.

Summa’s past experience in construction and implementation of Water Facility SCADA Systems and development of the Brant County SCADA System architecture and standards, in addition to our expertise in programming, instrumentation, documentation, and commissioning allowed for the successful completion of this project

Background

The Mount Pleasant Water Facility upgrade project consisted of a new treatment building, pressure filtration system, well pumps, highlift pumps, backwash pumps, sludge pumps, and related instrumentation and controls. SCADA requirements include an operator workstation, PLC panels, PLC and SCADA programming and integration of the new treatment building process into the existing facility, all SCADA modifications to the County’s main water SCADA system.

Scope of Work

The goal was to deliver the project on schedule and on budget to meet and exceed the expectations of the project.

Summa was responsible for supplying and commissioning all instrumentation and PLC panels. Programming responsibilities include all PLC and SCADA programming, testing, commissioning, and package system co-ordination and integration into the plant SCADA and the County’s main SCADA. County programming standards were maintained throughout the project.

Elgin WTP Residuals Management Facility

Elgin WTP Residuals Management Facility

Summa’s past experience in construction and implementation of Water Treatment Plant SCADA Systems and our involvement of the last major SCADA upgrade at the WTP, in addition to our expertise in programming, instrumentation, documentation, and commissioning allowed for the successful completion of this project

Background

The Residuals Management Facility project consists of a new facility to treat the Elgin WTP process wastewater. The facility includes a sludge scraper system, centrifuge, thickeners, polymer system, dechlorination system, associated pumps, conveyor, standby power, and instrumentation. SCADA requirements include PLC panels, PLC and SCADA programming, package systems integration into the plant SCADA, integrating complete system into the EAWTP SCADA system.

The goal was to deliver the project on schedule and on budget to meet and exceed the expectations of the project.

Summa was responsible for supplying SCADA hardware and software, supplying and commissioning instrumentation, PLC panels, PLC and SCADA. PLC and SCADA programming for the facility was provided including integration of the package systems the main EAWTP SCADA system. EAWTP programming standards were maintained throughout the project.

City of Kingston – Point Pleasant WTP Upgrades

Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant Upgrades

Summa’s broad experience and capabilities in the manufacturing of high quality control panels and supply of instrumentation for use in municipal water / wastewater process automations systems in addition to strong project management and timely commissioning lead to the successful completion of the project.

Background

The goal of the upgrades was to increase the plant capacity from 45 million LPD (litres per day) to 80 LPD

The Scope of the Project included:

  • New Filter Building
  • New chemical storage facilities for process chemical storage and metering
  • New electrical distribution, emergency power generator, new SCADA telemetry system
  • New High Lift Pumping Station
  • Extensions/Upgrades to mechanical room, electrical room, control room, washroom etc.

Intricate coordination of work with contractors and owner was required to phase and schedule activities around peak seasonal requirements for water supply

City of Orillia – SCADA Upgrade

Orillia SCADA Upgrade

Summa’s past experience in construction and implementation of Water and Wastewater Facility SCADA Systems and design of the Orillia SCADA System architecture and standards, in addition to our expertise in programming, instrumentation, documentation, and commissioning allowed for the successful completion of this project

Background

The City of Orillia water system consist of one water treatment plant a well pumping station, and 2 reservoirs. The wastewater system consists of one wastewater treatment plant and numerous sewage pumping stations. Communication between most remote facilities and the water and wastewater plants are via wireless network. The scope of this upgrade was to migrate to a new SCADA software and upgrade HMI hardware and PLC’s.

The goal was to deliver the project on schedule and on budget to meet and exceed the expectations of the project.

Summa was responsible to design, procure, install, and commission the SCADA system to address the HMI software, aging hardware, PLC upgrade, and securing data collection.

The upgrade included new workstations and rack mounted HMI and Historian servers complete with redundant hot-swappable power supplies and hard drives, new UPS, managed Ethernet switches, KVM switch, iFix software, and supporting backup and administration software. The existing SCADA software applications for both water and wastewater systems were migrated to iFix and commissioned complete with training for the plant operators.

Background

The Lakeview WTP expansion consists of a new treatment building, membrane filtration, UV, Ozone, and related instrumentation. SCADA requirements include hardware, network panels, HMI panels, and PLC panels.

Summa’s broad experience and capabilities in the manufacturing of high quality control panels and supply of instrumentation for use in municipal water / wastewater process automations systems in addition to strong project management and timely commissioning lead to the successful completion of the project.

Background

The Britannia water filtration plant commissioned and constructed between 1956 and 1959 is one of two water treatment plants that serve the City of Ottawa. The 23,000 m2 plant draws water from the Ottawa River and treats an average of about 200 megalitres of water a day.

To rehabilitate the plant and increase efficiency, a major project was undertaken that involved:

  • Filter media replacement in 12 of 18 filters
  • Control system upgrade for 18 filters
  • 2 new industrial blowers, piping and under-drains upgrading the backwash system

Intricate coordination of work with contractors and owner was required to phase and schedule activities around peak seasonal requirements for water supply

Petrolia – WTP SCADA Computer & Software Upgrade

Petrolia WTP SCADA Computer & Software Upgrade

Summa’s past experience in upgrading Water Treatment Plant SCADA Systems in addition to our expertise in hardware and software design, programming, documentation, and commissioning allowed for the successful completion of this project

Background

The Petrolia Water system consists of a main plant with three PALL system trains, a remote Booster Station, and Water Tower. The SCADA system is a Wonderware HMI running parallel with the PALL system HMI that was out of commission. The SCADA upgrade was to address data gaps in the plant reports, upgrade the computer to server grade, and upgrade the reporting system.

Scope of Work

The goal was to deliver the project on schedule and on budget to meet and exceed the expectations of the project.  Summa was responsible to design, supply, install, and commission the plant SCADA system upgrade to address their issues.

Summa replaced the failed PALL system computer and upgraded the HMI software and application to include the complete plant SCADA application. The PLC processors were upgraded and modified to include data store and forward to minimize data loss. The existing HMI computer was replaced with a server grade computer complete with client terminal. The existing reporting system was replaced with the Dream Reports package and configured.
